Style

Laurie is a documentary photographer meaning that he always captures images which best convey the stories, emotions and characters from every unique wedding day.
Reportage photography is more than just taking images when people are not looking, it is a style in which the photographer does not interfere with the day, stop the flow of events or ask people to pose. Instead the focus is on the couple and all that goes on during the day resulting in honest and genuine images captured with care and delicacy.
This kind of photography is timeless and will keep you coming back to the album year after year.

City Chambers Wedding Photography – Using the Fuji System

City Chambers Wedding Photography – Fuji X-Pro 1 Wedding
The truly discreet Fuji system is just so useful for getting in very close without intruding at all. Gone are the days you need to hold a huge DSLR to get great images. Although I still have 3 DSLRs I love to use the smaller, more discreet equipment as it really gives me an advantage from a documentary point-of-view in that it looks like I am just taking a snap rather than trying to compose an image.

The great noise control and sharp lenses make these cameras my go-to equipment more frequently, especially during ceremonies and bridal preparations. They are near silent, small and fast; everything you would want from a camera at a wedding.

City Chambers Wedding Edinburgh

Here is one image I just loved. I knew I had this image to look at at the end of this wedding and it was a great way to end a full day editing a recent wedding where many of the guests and family were French… I think I need more practice!

New Lanark Wedding Photography – Documentary Wedding Photography Scotland

Documentary Wedding Photography New Lanark.

I had a fantastic time documenting a lovely wedding at the New Lanark Mill Hotel. The people were having such a lovely time and it was great to just see the day develop as it did.

Here are a few images from the special day.

Royal Mile Wedding Photography – Documentary Wedding Photography Edinburgh

Being a photographer is a total joy. Everything about it is just pure and it documenting is total expression and creative freedom for me.

At a recent wedding in the Royal Mile in Edinburgh I had the privelige of documenting a wedding there where so many things happened which I noticed that by mid day I really had worked non-stop and by meal time I almost passed out! I believe in keeping very active as photography can be demanding but it really pushed me and it was just so exciting to be there.

I think it was the combination of what was happening as well as trying creative shots, composing better and keeping tabs on what people were saying waiting for the decisive moment to raise the camera but it was a fantastic day and here is just one of the many expressive images I happened to capture.

New Portfolio

It has been a very busy and successful year so far and things are inevitably becoming quieter in preparation for winter. This is a great time to continue with unfinished projects, refresh the mind with inspiration and update the portfolio from this year.

I have had the tremendous privilege of documenting some amazing weddings this year and have literally taken tens of thousands of images, which although easily done on today’s cameras, tends not to be my style as I like to capture the image first time. At the weddings though I have noticed so many more stories and characters as I continue to relentlessly pursue the documentary style and have therefore taken many more images. I have had the tremendous privilege of being published by several magazines, travelled up and down the country for weddings in England and across Scotland and have some phenomenal weddings planned in the pipeline for next year.

I have selected only a few which cover a broad range from engagements right up until the dances and looking through the images brought back so many wonderful memories.

Please feel free to check it out here and leave a comment and let me know what you think.

The Equipment I Use

(Behold one of my tools for my work; my camera. I have a few and a number of lenses, however this blog is about how I see and use my equipment in my working life. Maybe this will give you an insight into how a working photographer sees things.)

When I meet with couples before their wedding day I love to get the camera out and do some images with them. What that means is esentailly me taking just one camera and one lens and capturing them just as they are.

This is great as it means on the wedding day itself they won’t be thinking about images at all and also they get some extra images which will be invaluable in a few years time.

I don’t generally talk about equipment but over the years I have realised that smaller, lighter equipment is not only easier to operate quickly but is less obtrusive on a wedding day and in situations which require delicacy.

The truth is you dont need huge cameras and lenses to take amazing images. Some of the greatest documentary photographers use the Fuji system which is far more discreet. I still prefer the weather-proffed ruggedness of the Nikon equipment at the moment due to Scotland being a tad rainier than a tropical rainforrest!

I’ve had the D800 and D3s cameras for quite some time now and they really have been great cameras. Although the megapixel count is huge on the D800 there have been times where the resolution has been helpful. The D800’s noise control is also excellent. Canon seem to be making huge leaps forward in this area, especially with the 6D and 5dmkiii, however it is still very useable at iso 12800 at times.

I […]
